Margaret Mohrmann, MD

• Biography:

  I am a student of biology and of theology. My first career is in medicine; I’m a pediatrician.

• I have always been on a medical school faculty where, like many of my generation in the field, I’ve done a bit of everything, from directing a PICU to attending in the clinic to teaching introductory clinical courses to medical students. In mid-career I left full-time medicine to pursue a doctorate in religious ethics. Since then, my academic time has been distributed between teaching and directing ethics programs in the medical school and teaching undergraduate and graduate students in religious studies at the University of Virginia. This place where I have made my intellectual home—the intersection of medicine, religion, and ethics—is fertile ground for meditation on the ways in which these human concerns inevitably come together and fall apart and, it turns out, fertile ground for poetry.
