A Winter WalkWinter 2015 - Volume 19 Number 1
A Winter Walk photograph Sally J Cullen, MD, MS This photograph was taken from the boardwalk on the shore of Mono Lake in Mono Lake Tufa State Reserve in CA. The reserve was established to protect the lake surface; its surrounding wetlands, which are visited by millions of birds each year; and the iconic calcium-carbonate spires rising from the lake. The spires were formed by the interaction between freshwater springs and the highly alkaline lake water. Dr Cullen retired in 2012 as Assistant Chief of Pediatrics at Kaiser Permanente Folsom in CA. For her, photography is a way of capturing and celebrating beauty, especially of the natural world. More of her work may be viewed at: www.myparkphotos.com/property/SallyCullen.html.
