As I look at a landscape, a completed photograph jumps out at me. For me, a landscape is a series of composed photographs. I continue to do landscapes but my current work is making portraits. I think of portraits as a visual composition of a person's image plus the image painted by their words. I am doing the portraits of spiritual leaders in towns in California's Central Valley. I drive from town to town, stopping at houses of worship and other public spaces and I strike up conversations with people. I introduce myself and the majority of the time people are happy to participate. Many give me the names of other people they think I should meet. I record our conversation and combine excerpts from those conversations with the portrait. My goal is to publish a book in the next few years. At this point I have photographed pastors, rabbis, imams, Native American spiritual guides, a faith healer, Baha'i members, Hmong shaman, and others. I have learned that a spiritual leader is not always someone who graduated from a seminary, madrassa, or yeshiva. This project has evolved, and I acknowledge is, in part, my own spiritual search. Each person I meet expands my world.
