I created Writing from the Heart while sitting in a chair in a hotel hallway immediately after I attended the workshop, Writing to Understand Your Life, given by Tom Janisse, MD. Writing from the Heart describes my experience of writing about a memorable moment in my life.
I began writing haiku in 2002 by attending a workshop with Father Thomas Hand, SJ, who had studied this form of poetry in Japan for many years. I was taken with the simplicity (and challenge) to observe and then describe an object, scene, or emotional experience in few words. I enjoy the rigor of writing sparely to create a picture of what is, thus refining my ability to be in the present moment. This process offers this introvert a means of sharing with others while enabling me to understand more clearly what I might be seeing or feeling.
